Job Description:Under the direct supervision of the Provincial Horticulture Coordinator and overall supervision of the Regional Horticulture Coordinator, the Horticulture Extension Worker will do the following;
  • Prepare weekly and monthly activity reports. Support farmers to choose good lead farmers Conduct Farmer field school and Agro-Eco system analysis Support and train farmers/owners of existing and newly established orchards The Ext workers together with the coordinator would take part in community  mobilization/meetings, identifying farmers, forming groups, and later on even support establishment of the Common Interest Groups. Work closely with marketing and safeguard especially IPM colleagues and coordinate their activities with them. Work closely with DAIL extension workers to share the knowledge Train farmers in new horticulture techniques and methods to enhance productivity in the area of high value horticulture. Extension Workers will attend meetings in district level with the collaboration of DAIL and prepare reports to Provincial Extension Coordinator. The Extension Workers will deliver the different services requested by the Provincial Coordinator. Support farmer groups through field visits and training using the (FFS) Farmer Field School principle. Supervision of new orchard planting and orchard layout. Collect farmer contribution and remit the same in the bank account of NHLP regularly Any other assignment given by NHLP management

Background

About National Horticulture and Livestock Project (NHLP), Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestoc:

NHLP is to promote adoption of improved production practices by target farmers, with gradual rollout of farmer-centric agricultural services mechanisms and investment support. Service delivery centered on farmers would lead in practice to increased participation of beneficiaries both in the definition of services required and in the delivery itself, as well as improved ratio of overall costs reaching beneficiaries as direct investments, in order to promote sustainability and efficiency.

The project would contribute to the overarching goal of increased productivity and overall production of horticultural products and improved animal production and health. The technical strategy for achieving this objective is based on the delivery of extension and investment support through strengthened mechanisms. The National Horticulture and Livestock Project (NHLP) would have three components: (1) Horticultural Production, (2) Animal Production and Health, and (3) Implementation Management and Technical Assistance Support. These activities would be implemented in 100 focus districts spread over time as conditions warrant in up to 22 target provinces.

  • Bachelor of Agriculture, Horticulture graduates would be given preference. Bachelor with 2 year experience in the related field or diploma in Agriculture with 3 years of experience. Must be residents of the operating district Must be able to travel in the districts where NHLP operates Must be familiar with the operating area with the crops grown Should pay respect to custom and cultural behavior of residents of operating area
